Georgia is a state in southeastern part of United States. It got established in 1732 and is named after King George ll of United Kingdom. It is the 9th most populated state of around 9,687,653 citizens as per 2010 census. Georgia is famous as the Peach State and the Empire State of the South. Its capital is Atlanta which is the most populated city. It was the 4th state to approve the United States constitution in 1788 on second of January and also was among the 7 confederate states.

It is surrounded by Florida in south, Atlantic Ocean and South Carolina in east and flanked by Alabama in west and Tennessee and North Carolina in north. Blue Ridge Mountains occupy the northern part of the state; it is a mountain range in the Appalachian Mountain system. Brasstown Bald is the highest point in Georgia which is 4,784 feet and sea level is the lowest point. The central piedmont is from the foothills to the fall line, from where the rivers flow to the continental coastal plain of the southern part of the state

Its area is 153,910km and is twenty fourth in size among the fifty U. S. states. It has 159 counties. During 2007-2008 Georgia’s counties were rated as the fastest growing after Texas among the country’s 100 counties. They are granted home rule to deal with local issues only. There are 4 counties, who have consolidated and are established in Georgia viz,
• Athens (Clarke County),
• Columbus (Muscogee County),
• Cusseta (Chattahoochee County) and
• Augusta (Richmond County),

In terms of land area Georgia is the largest state of the Mississippi river but is 4th largest behind Michigan, followed by Florida and Wisconsin, in terms of total area i.e. land and also expanses of water which are part of state territory.
