Maine County Map, State, Map of Maine Cities

Let us go through the Maine county map, cities and state map along with information on the state. The state of Maine is located in the northeastern part of the United States in the New England region. It is bordered by New Hampshire to the west and by the Atlantic Ocean to the south and east. The Canadian provinces of New Brunswick and Quebec border the state from the northeast and northwest respectively.

The state of Maine is the easternmost and the northernmost part of New England. It is famous for its scenic countryside, with its rolling and low mountains, its jagged and predominantly rocky coastline, its striking waterways and its interiors that are densely populated with forests and foliage. Maine is also equally well known for its seafood cuisine that includes clams and lobsters.

The original residents of Maine were indigenous people who had been living there for many centuries. When the European colonists first visited the state, it was inhabited by Algonquian-speaking individuals. The French were the first European settlers in Maine in the year 1604. Pierre Dugua, Sieur de Mons established the first settlement on the Saint Croix Island.
The English colonists occupied the coastal regions, but the settlements were few and far in between due to the harsh climate and terrain. Maine was originally a part of Massachusetts, until it was awarded statehood in 1820 and officially became the twenty-third state.
The state of Maine is divided into 16 counties. Most of the names of the counties are derived from various sources such as American, British and Native American cultures. Thus the names are a reflection of the varied heritage of Maine that dates from pre-colonial to colonial to the national.

The Federal Information Processing Standard code or the FIPS code for Maine is 23 and can be combined with any county code, which can be written as 23XXX.
