The New England region that is a part of the northeastern United States is home to the state of Connecticut. Connecticut shares its borders with state of New York to the west and south, the state of Massachusetts to the north and the state of Rhode Island towards the east.

The state of Connecticut gets its name from the Connecticut River which is one of the major rivers in the United States. The river almost bisects the state into two halves.

The city of Hartford is the capital of Connecticut. Most of the western and southern regions of Connecticut which include a major chunk of the state’s population form a part of the New York metropolitan area. It should be noted that three counties of Connecticut are also statistically incorporated in the New York City united statistical area. This area of New York is also widely known as the Tri-State area.

The greatest density as well as the majority of the state’s population is concentrated at Cheshire which is in New Haven County. This region also falls within the Tri-State area.

Connecticut has around 3.5 million residents and is ranked 29th in the list of most populous states. When it comes to size, it is really small and is ranked 48th, thus making it the fourth most densely populated state. It is called by different nicknames such as ‘The land of steady habits’, the nutmeg state and the Constitution state. The state of Connecticut played a big part in the formation of the federal form of government in the United States.

The Dutch were the first colonists in Connecticut with a few settlements that were based mainly out of Hartford. The English colonists expanded to several regions of Connecticut in the later years.

Traditionally, Connecticut has had a strong maritime industry. It has now diversified into the financial sector that includes insurance and hedge funds. Even though Connecticut can be counted among one of the richest states in the United States, it has widespread disparity of income between the urban and suburban residents.
