Map of Colorado Counties, Cities, State Map

Here is map of Colorado cities, counties, state map as well as information about the state. The state of Colorado comprises of the western areas of the Great Plains, much of the Rock Mountains as well as the northeastern regions of the Colorado Plateau. The state of Colorado is also a part of the Mountain States as well as a part of the Western United States.

The Colorado River was named ‘Río Colorado’ by the early Spanish explorers due to the red colored silt that the river carried forward from the mountains. Thus the state of Colorado got its name.

The President of the United States, Ulysses S. Grant signed a proclamation on August 1, 1876 and thereby formally admitted Colorado as the 38th state. Since 1876 was the centennial year of the United States Declaration of Independence, and since Colorado was officially conferred statehood in this year, the state of Colorado is often referred to as the ‘Centennial State’.

The northwest state of Wyoming borders Colorado to the north; the south of the state is bordered by New Mexico and partly by the southern state of Oklahoma; Utah is present on the western border and finally the Midwest states of Kansas and Nebraska border the state from the east and the northeast.

Along with New Mexico, Utah and Arizona, Colorado forms a part of the Four Corner states. It means that the borders of these states meet at one common point which is called the ‘Four Corners’. This is the center of the American Southwest. Colorado is also one of three states in the United States with no natural borders.

Colorado is known for its vivid countryside and some of the notable features of the scenic landscape
comprise of forests, plateaus, mountains, mesas, desert lands, rivers, high plains and canyons. As per the United States census of 2010, the population of the state of Colorado had increased by nearly 16.92 percent over the last decade to arrive at a figure of 5,029,196 Colorado residents. The capital of Colorado is Denver and it is also the most populated city in the state.
