The state of California is situated on the western coast of the United States. After Alaska and Texas, it is the third biggest state in the United States and also the most populated. The Los Angeles Metropolitan Area and the San Francisco Bay Area present in California are the second and the sixth largest populated areas in the United States. In addition, California is home to 8 of the 50 most populated cities in the United States. The cities are Los Angeles, San Jose, Fresno, Long Beach, San Diego, San Francisco, Sacramento and Oakland.

The geography of California is diverse, varied and distinctive. It has the Pacific Ocean coastline on the western front; to the east are the Sierra Nevada Mountains, the Mojave Desert areas are towards the southeast and Redwood–Douglas-fir forests are in the north. In the center of the state is the fertile agricultural area called Central Valley.

California is also home to the highest and lowest points in the continental United States, i.e. Mount Whitney and the Death Valley respectively. In addition, it has the third largest coastline of all the states in the United States.

The state is situated along the Pacific Ring of Fire and hence is prone to increased number of earthquakes. There are as many as thirty seven thousand instances of earthquakes that are recorded on an annual basis.
Under the rule of Spanish colonists, California was initially a part of the territory of California that included Baja California in Mexico. But after the Mexican-American War, a part of California was ceded to the United States. The western region of Alta California thus became the state of California and was given the status of the 31st state as of September 9, 1850.

California is the home of the American entertainment industry. In addition, various sectors such as information technology, tourism, agriculture, manufacturing, aerospace and education also contribute to the economy of the state.
