Map of alaska with cities

Check out Alaska map with cities and information on how this prominent state of US came into being.

The state of Alaska is the largest in the United States. Originally, Alaska was not a part of the United States. It was bought from Russia for 7.2 million dollars on March 30, 1867. It underwent several changes before becoming a territory on May 11, 1912 and eventually achieved statehood on January 3, 1959.

It is located in the northwest region of North America and is bordered by Canada to the east, the Pacific Ocean to the south and west and the Arctic Ocean to the north. The name Alaska is derived from the Aleut word ‘alaxsxaq’ which means ‘the mainland’ and was the name given by the Russian colonists.
As per the 2010 census, Alaska has the lowest density of population in the United States with around 710,231 individuals residing in the Anchorage metropolitan region.

Alaska has the largest coastline among all the states in the United States. The capital of Alaska is Juneau. The state of Alaska is divided into six regions, but there are no official borders that demarcate each region. They are as follows:

South Central Alaska: It consists of the Kenai Peninsula, Anchorage and the Matanuska-Susitna Valley and is the most densely populated region of Alaska. In addition, the unpopulated and rural areas west of the Wrangell Mountains and south of the Alaska Range, the communities of Valdez and Cordova and the Prince William Sound area are also included in this region.

Southeast Alaska: It contains Sitka, the big town of Ketchikan and the state capital Juneau. This region is closest to the continental United States. The Tongass National Forest which is the biggest national forest in the United States also falls in this region.

Alaska Interior: Most of this region is uninhabited wilderness with Fairbanks being the only community of any considerable size. It is also home to Mount McKinley which is both the highest peak in North American as well as Alaska.

Southwest Alaska: This region is known for Brooks Falls which has the spectacular sights of grizzly bears that hunt for salmons.

Alaska North Slope: The region is sparsely populated and mostly tundra in nature. The region is famous for its oil deposits

Aleutian Islands: It consists of several volcanic and small islands that number more than three hundred.
