Alabama State Map

The state of Alabama is situated in southeastern part of the United States. The state is bordered by Florida and the Gulf of Mexico to the south, to the north is Tennessee, Mississippi is in the west and the state of Georgia is to the west.

It has the second largest concentration of inland waterways in the United States and is ranked thirtieth in total land mass. As of 2009, Alabama had 4.7 million residents that contributed to it becoming the 23rd most populous state.

The state of Alabama was predominantly a backward state till the late 1960’s due to its heavy dependence on agriculture and underrepresentation of African Americans in the political and economic system. However, it has since diversified into mineral extraction, technology, heavy manufacturing and education. In addition, the installation of many military establishments in the state has also contributed to the growth in government jobs.
The state of Alabama is often referred to as the Yellowhammer state, and is unofficially nicknamed after the state bird. Additionally, it is occasionally called the ‘Heart of Dixie’.

Montgomery is capital of the state of Alabama, with the official flower being the Camellia and official state tree being the Longleaf Pine. Birmingham is the most populous city and Huntsville city has the largest total land mass. The city of Mobile is the oldest city in the state of Alabama and was founded by the French colonists.
Alabama has been the inspiration to many in the field of entertainment, with the song ‘Sweet home Alabama’ going on to attain cult status. There have been many movies that have been made as an ode to the southern lifestyle in the state of Alabama.

Alabama Cities Map

According to the 2010 census, there are 460 cities and towns in Alabama. The prominent cities include Montgomery, Birmingham, Auburn, Huntsville, Mobile, Decatur, Dotham, Tuscaloosa and Tuscumbia which is Helen Keller's birth city. Montgomery is the capital while Birmingham is the largest city of Alabama.
